Description:

Performs journey-level work in repairing and overhauling gasoline and diesel-pow ered automobiles, trucks, and various other light and medium sized equipment. May repair heavy equipment where complexity of specific job is consistent with other duties performed. Diagnoses causes for faulty operations; makes repairs to all components of equipment including engine, power train, electrical system, brakes, etc.; replaces and grinds valves; rebuilds generators, carburetors, and distributors; relines brakes and rebuilds wheel cylinders and master cylinders

Guide:

• An all-around journey-level trades worker (one who has completed a formal or informal apprenticeship-training program of from two to three years).
• Repairs and overhauls autos, trucks, and other light and medium-sized equipment.

Exclusion:

• Specialists, such as transmission, electrical or tune-up specialists.
• Classes with duties primarily involving heavy diesel equipment, multiple transmissions or differentials, or heavy-duty hydraulic equipment.
• Mechanic working primarily on heavy equipment.
• Lead mechanics.
