Description:

Under direction, plans, directs, and supervises the work of crews engaged in the following functions; maintenance and repair of streets and alleys; painting of pavement markings and erection of streets and traffic signs; cleaning and mechanical sweeping of streets; and general maintenance duties. Plans, organizes, assigns and supervises the work of a large crew or several small crews engaged in the care and maintenance of public rights-of-way, parks and government buildings. Usually responsible for specific assignment either by function or geographical sector. Sets and/or enforces operating and maintenance standards and procedures; adjusts work procedures to meet production schedules; checks work in progress or upon completion; instructs, trains and evaluates work performance of assigned personnel; enforces safety rules and regulations; estimates material and labor needs; keeps times and production records.

Guide:

• Considered a full supervisor.
• In smaller agency, usually reports to division head; in larger agency, may report to Superintendent or division head.
• Requires three to five years of increasingly responsible experience performing construction and maintenance work including one year in a lead supervisory capacity.

Exclusion:

• Positions where supervisory functions are secondary to production duties performed (i.e., lead workers, working foremen).
• Superintendent/division head responsible for development and maintenance of entire agency (as described in Maintenance Superintendent above).
